His mother was the first to accept the gospel and was baptized in 1843. His father joined two years later. Robert was determined to save money to take his parents and siblings to Utah , but his father died in England. Robert came alone to the Valley and earned money to send for his family, all but John who came later. Robert worked in Salt Lake for about a year as a shoemaker. Then he moved to Manti where he settled. He was a shoemaker, a trade learned from his father in England, and a farmer, and he ran a Carding machine shop. He fought in the Black Hawk Indian War. He was well known for the beautiful flowers and good vegetables he raised. Robert had a good voice and sang in duets and the church choir He also led the choir on many occasions.
